Fractional counsel, also known as fractional general counsel (GC) or outsourced general counsel, is a freelance lawyer or law firm that provides legal services to companies on a part-time or as-needed basis. Fractional counsel can be a cost-effective option for businesses that need senior legal input but don't want to commit to a full-time in-house resource. They can also be beneficial for companies that have urgent projects or need to save time on contracts. A Fractional Counsel may assist with the following:

• Time-consuming issues: Such as drafting contracts and agreements, or reviewing lease agreements

• Liability issues: Such as understanding liabilities, tax obligations, and employee inquiries

While any lawyer admitted to practice law in any state or territory may practice US Federal law and represent clients at a US Federal Agency, the in-house legal practice may require state admission in some instances. It will depend on the specific state practice of law requirements for fractional in-house counsels.
